A chegada (The Arrival)

Meu primeiro dia no Haiti foi mais ou menos assim, cheguei no aeroporto de PAP às 14h do horário local. A chegada foi "normal", passei facilmente pela polícia de imigração e Aduana mas aí já ficou claro que a comunicação com os locais não será fácil meu inglês não foi útil em nenhum momento, apenas sinais feitos pelos oficiais. Encontrei na saída o Yash, Nepalês responsável pelos UNVs (UN volunteers) que está aqui há dois anos e meio. 

My first day in Haiti was more or less like this, got in the PAP airport at 14h local time. The arrival was normal, easily passed the immigration police and Customs but there is already clear that communication with the locals will not be easy my English was not helpful at any time, just signs made by the officials. I found out in the Yash, responsible for UNVs (UN volunteers).

Estes foram meus dois primeiros registros desta terra.

Yash me levou para a base da ONU que fica a menos de um kilometro do aeroporto internacional. A base ocupa um espaço enorme e as construções em geral tem uma aparência bem simples.
Eu estava super cansada mas tinha que resolver várias coisas antes de descansar. A Lucile, uma haitiana que trabalha na UNV, me ajudou, ela fez meu cadastro no sistema, me deu um chip de telefone local, me levou para fazer meu documento de identificação e a conhecer meu local de trabalho. 

Yash took me to the UN base that is less than a mile from the international airport. The base occupies a huge space and buildings in general has a very simple appearance.

I was super tired but had to settle several things before resting. Lucile, a Haitian working at UNV helped me, she did my registration in the system, gave me a local phone chip, led me to make my identification and took me to my workplace.

Meu novo crachá - My new badge

Chegando lá conheci Nedi, um militar aposentado do Leste Europeu que está como responsável pela nossa área enquanto o Fernando está ausente (Fernando é o chefe da minha área). O Nedi me alugou por mais de uma hora, sim eu só queria uma cama pra dormir e ele passou uma hora falando! 
Ele tinha que me apresentar à área onde irei trabalhar, à ONU e ao Haiti. Essa conversa foi um tanto surpreendente e ao mesmo tempo chocante. A parte boa é que descobri que vou poder ficar morando aqui no alojamento se quiser, com um apartamento só pra mim, com muita segurança e conforto suficiente, além disso terei uma semada de descanso a cada oito semanas de trabalho (já estou sonhando com as viagens...). Segundo o Nedi isso é muito necessário uma vez que o trabalho e o ambiente são bastante tensos. 
O lado chocante foi que, pelas palavras dele, eu nunca poderei andar a pé na rua e para a minha segurança devo ficar isolada dos locais. Eu já esperava por algo assim, mas ao chegar aqui a primeira impressão é de viverei na bolha da ONU, ou seja, nunca terei uma experiência real do que é este país e quem é seu povo (mesmo que eu quisesse conviver com as pessoas daqui a língua é uma barreira). Assim, é muito estranho pensar que estou aqui para "ajudar" mas que nunca poderei estar em contato com as pessoas que vivem aqui. 

Arriving there I met Nedi, an Eastern European that is as responsible for our area while the boss is missing. The Nedi talk to me for over an hour. I just wanted a bed to sleep and he spent an hour talking about stuff!
He had to introduce me to the area where I will work, to the UN and a little bit Haiti. This talk was somewhat surprising and shocking at the same time. The good part is that I discovered that I can stay in the living accommodation if I wish, with an apartment just for me, with lots of safety and comfort enough. Moreover, I'll have a rest every eight weeks of work (I'm already dreaming of the travels I can do around here...). 
The shocking part was that, by his words, I'll never be able to walk on the street and for my safety should be isolated from local people. I was expecting something like this, but the first impression is that I'll live in the bubble of the UN. Thus, it is very strange to think that I'm here to "help" but I can never be in contact with people who live here.

A apresentação - First advices 

Sobre o trabalho, Nedi me explicou que vou trabalhar diretamente com a base de dados de inteligência de defesa e que terei a responsabilidade de administrá-lo, bem como fornecer suporte aos parceiros que utilizam o mesmo. Como trabalho será em uma área muito estratégica e que necessita ser mantida dentro de absoluto sigilo não falarei a respeito desse assunto por aqui. 
Fora isso o Nedi me encheu de recomendações, segurança em primeiro lugar sempre, não sair sozinha, ficar morando no alojamento que é mais seguro, só beber água engarrafada, usar muito alcool gel e spray para mosquitos. Falando assim parece tranquilo mas é que ele repetiu milhares de vezes estas e outras recomendações, já estava difícil manter os olhos abertos... 

At work Nedi explained that I'll work directly with the database of defense intelligence and that I will have the responsibility of managing it as well as provide support to partners using the same database. As work will be in a very strategic area that needs to be kept within strict confidentiality I will not talk about this topic here again.
Otherwise he gave me millions of advices, safety first always, do not go out alone, stay in the camp that is safer, only drink bottled water, use a lot of hand sanitizer and spray for mosquitoes. Writing it here, it seems to be just a few tips, but he repeated thousands of times these and other recommendations, was already hard to keep my eyes open...

Os colegas - My colleagues 

Finalmente fui apresentada a toda a equipe como a nova administradora de banco de dados (nas palavras do Nedi a nova Database Guru, ahahahha).
Dentro da minha equipe tem dois militares brasileiros que foram designados pelo Nedi como meus fiéis escudeiros, hahaha. Gostei disso, eu nunca tive dois fiéis escudeiros então to me sentindo importante. Apesar de eu sempre ter sido super independente a vida toda e gostar de ser assim, neste momento entendo que é necessário ter pessoas para me ajudar a me localizar antes de poder me virar. 
Ah, esqueci de dizer que na verdade terei três escudeiro, o terceiro é Seydou, un Senegalês que é meu colega de trabalho e de UNV. Gostei do Seydou ele foi super simpático  e prestativo. 

Finally I was introduced to the whole team as the new administrator of the database (according to Nedi, the new Database Guru, ahahahha ).
Within my team there are two Brazilian Military who were appointed by Nedi as my faithful helpers. Despite the fact that I have always have had a super independent life and that like to be independent, at this moment it is necessary to have people to help me to get started before I could turn around.
Oh, forgot to say that in fact the third helper is Seydou, who is my coworker and UNV. I like Seydou he was super friendly and helpful.

Mais surpresas - More surprises 

Outra surpresa que tive é que Seydou e eu teremos um carro para dividir, assim que eu tiver passado no teste de motorista da ONU poderei dirigir!! Gosto da idéia de poder dirigir, apesar de que aqui isso não será nada parecido com ter meu próprio carro em Curitiba por que lá eu ia pra onde quisesse a qualquer hora do dia ou da noite (aqui nós somos proíbidos de andar de carro entre 1 e 5h da manhã e fora da cidade entre o nascer e por do sol). Mas é muito bom, terei um veículo, o que aqui é uma necessidade básica já que não posso ir a pé a lugar algum fora da base. 

Another surprise I had is that I will have a car to share with Seydou, so when I have passed the UN test to drive, I'll drive ! I like the idea of being able to drive myself around, although here it will be nothing like having my own car in Curitiba. There I would go wherever I wanted at any time of day or night (here we are prohibited from driving between 1 and 5 am and out of town between sunrise and sunset). But it is very good, I will have a vehicle, which is a basic necessity here since I can not walk anywhere off base.

O caminho pra casa nova

As seis e tanto da tarde o Seydou me trouxe ao alojamento, ele fica há pouco mais de 20 minutos, e muitos buracos na estrada, da nossa base.
No caminho vi um pouco, bem pouquinho, do que vou ver por aqui, muita gente nas ruas, sujeira e um trânsito absolutamente caótico, não tem sinalização nenhuma, em lugares mal tem uma rua nos buracos.  Os sinais do terremoto ainda estão por todo o lado e a pobreza é visível (mas gente, o que vi por enquanto não é nada muito pior do que vi na Vila Torres em Curitiba ou a Cidade de Deus no Rio).


Anyway, at about six pm Seydou brought me to the camp, it is just over 20 minutes, and many potholes, from our base.

On the way I saw a little, just a little, of what I'll see here, a lot of people on the streets, dirt and an absolutely chaotic trafic, in places that barely have a street. The signs of the earthquake are still everywhere and poverty is visible (but what I saw, so far, is nothing much worse than I've seen in Vila Torres in Curitiba or the City of God in Rio).

O acampamento

O cafofo  -  The little apartment

Enfim, em poucos minutos chegamos no 'oásis' onde fica o acampamento dos civis da ONU, aqui tem muita segurança, cercas altas e guardas dia e noite. O nosso 'oásis' está protegido pelo exército brasileiro e os de alguns outros países que estão por aqui. Ou seja, estamos literalmente isolados, mas ao menos aqui dentro é permitido andar a pé ou correr, tem mercado e uma mini academia.


In a few minutes we arrived at the 'oasis' where is the camp of UN civilian, here we have a lot of security, high fences and guards day and night. Our 'oasis' is also suroundend by the Brazilian Army and some other countries'armys that are here. That is, we are literally isolated, but at least here in is allowed for me to walk or run, there is a mini market and a little gym.

Os apartamentos tem uns 30 m2, é um quarto-sala, cozinha e banheiro. Não tem luxo algum mas tem todo o conforto que preciso, internet, TV a cabo (tem canais em inglês, espanhol e francês - que quero aprender o quanto antes), água quente, microondas, telefone e o mais importante: um ar-condicionado. Ou seja está tudo ótimo, é muito mais do que eu tive quando mudei pra Curitiba pra estudar.

The apartment is about 30 m2 big, is a bedroom-living1 bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. He has no luxury but it has all the comfort I need, internet, cable TV (channels have in English, Spanish and French - I want to learn as soon as possible), hot water, microwave, telephone and most importantly, an air-conditioner. In conclusion it is great, it's much more than I had when I moved to Curitiba to study.

O Clima - The weather

Gente, em pleno inverno a temperatura está em torno dos trinta graus e a Lucile já me avisou pra me preparar para muito mais calor no verão. 

My friends, in winter the temperature is around thirty degrees and Lucile already warned me to prepare for more heat in the summer. 

O fim do dia  - The end of the day

Depois de trazer minhas malas para o apartamento o Seydou ainda me fez ir ao mercado comprar água e comida, não tinha frutas e verduras frescas no mercado, e era tão pequeno que fiquei preocupada em não ter vegetais pra comprar (mas já conheci os mercados que deixam pouco a desejar em relação aos EUA, segundo Nedi). Pelo visto a maior parte dos vegetais que vou consumir aqui são enlatados, congelados ou engarrafados... 
As sete e meia o Seydou finalmente me deixou em paz, eu não queria mais fazer ou ver nada. Só tomei um banho, achei minha coberta e roupas limpas e comi qualquer coisa. Falei com o Matt e a mamy pelo skype e caì na cama às 9h.

After bringing my bags to the apartment Seydou still made me go to market to buy food and water. They had no fresh fruits and vegetables at the market, and it was so small that I was worried about not having a place to buy vegetables. Apparently most of the vegetables that I consume here are canned, frozen or bottled...
At 7:3pm Seydou finally left me in alone, I ddid not do or see anything for the day. Just took a shower, I found my cover and clean clothes and ate something. I talked to Matt and mamy over Skype and felt asleep at 9pm.
